Planning a trip to Michigan the week of August 8. Can anyone tell me if steam will be up at The Henry Ford in Dearborn? How about the Huckleberry at Flint?

the Huck maybe closed on Monday & Tuesday. suggest u find there web site and see if open. Don't know about Ford, they use to have a web siteTom C.

So far as I know, one steam locomotive is always in operation during peak season at the Henry Ford's Greenfield Village. It will be either the Mason 0-6-4T bogie engine (formerly 4'1" guage) or the 4-4-0 fabricated from a 0-4-0 back in the thirties (and recently equipped with a partial Lempor exhaust according to an earlier post). A nice gravel-pit 0-6-0 is also operable but seems to be infrequently used. On a visit a couple years ago we saw their expert staff tramming the Mason Bogie and remanufacturing the steam joint that passes through the swiveling bogie bearing - fascinating. Even if the only thing running were a handcar the Village railroad plant and display would be well worth your visit.And remember - the Steam Railroading Institute is only 30 miles west of the Huckleberry (which should be using its D&RGW 2-8-2 by the time of your visit). Just turn left after the culm pile from the surface coal mines along M-21. Mississippian Rwy. 2-8-0 No. 76 is now in transit by flat car from Ohio, so the number of steam locomotives in mid-Michigan is going up.

Steam will be up at Greenfield Village. Most likely the Torch Lake (Mason) will be running. The Edison (4-4-0, Ford rebuild) is having its new cylinder installed and may be running by August.

The Henry Ford is running the Torch Lake. They haven't completed the new cylinder for the Edison. We haven't completed the 464 yet, but we are doing the final assembly.
