Post subject:  More general question on scrappings, etc.

Thanks to all who responded to my posting yesterday; however, my question was more along the lines of general info about E, F and FA units that might be in danger of being scrapped, or those that have recently been cut up, such as the FL9 at the link below:http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=108990Could anyone enlighten me as to other units that are "on the edge" at the present time? I find it sad that some of these relics are still in danger of being lost, especially those that are still in revenue service or were until recently. Thanks in advance for any info.

IC 104(??) was cut up in Chicago a few months ago. It was an E-8 or E-9 of Burlington ancestry. I'm sure there are others on the board that know more about it than I do.Stuart

Rule Number One of Railroad Preservation: Everything can't be saved !!!There is a quite an involved story behind these locomotives which I will save for some other time. However...The FL-9 locomotive shown in the picture was modified to such a degree that almost none of the original fabric remained. The locomotives were built with brand new diesel engines, AC drives, etc. I suspect that the salvage price reflected the fact that each unit would yield a good diesel engine, AR8 alternator, etc. Given the fact that the two current owners of FL9's (MNR and CDOT) have placed units in museums all over the Northeast AND the fact the 6-8 Amtrak units were also re-sold for service, I don't see what the issue is.

Does anyone know the future plans for the Erie Mining F9's (or the Alco RS11) featured in the May 2005 Railfan & Railroad? The article mentioned that the RS11 and one of the F's were leased back from their current owners. Are any of the remaining F's spoken for? Also, how much original fabric is left on these units?

These pieces (and others) are stored in the old D&H Colonie, NY yard, a bit north of Albany. Owned by the Mohawk & Hudson NRHS chapter, mostly ex D&H, but some ex NYC, WM. The FA unit is supposed to go to a WM oriented organization but has yet to move- the siding is landlocked. Mr. Yarger knows about these pieces I'm sure, easily seen from his "office." Most, if not all, were inside the big shops until about ten years ago when rent by Guilford was raised. Shops now gone. In addition to the stuff scene here, they've got a wonderful D&H boxcar, a caboose, and an ex World's Fair car, styled by Lowey, that could sure use a better home. This same chapter has another location of stuff "stored," more ex D&H equipment, and some NYC juice jacks. Joshua K. Blay

Looking at a couple of the lists and websites, it appears there are literally hundreds of E and F units still in existence, even many more FA and FPA units than I would have guessed. While losing one unit, especially if it is for "your" railroad is always considered a loss, it sounds like there are more cab units still around than can logically be preserved and maintained. My first thought is that priority should be given to classes of cab units that are rare. The Rock Island E6 and the PRR E7 come to mind. The E7 is safe but the E6 is offered for sale. The FT units are in St. Louis, correct?I know that when most people think of equipment restoration they think of locomotives. I wish more people would take on freight cars and passenger cars that provide a reason for the locomotives in the first place.
