On my way through the area yesterday, I stopped at Mammoth Cave National Park near Cave City, Kentucky to snap some photos of the Baldwin Steam Dummy Locomotive and wooden combine on display. The locomotive underwent a cosmetic restoration a few years ago, and was placed back on display. The locomotive and combine are in good shape, and have been under cover for most of their preserved lives. The Mammoth Cave Railroad was built to ferry tourists from the L&N mainline to the old Mammoth Cave hotel. The railroad ceased operation in the 1930s when the cave became a national park. The locomotive, number 4, was incorrectly lettered "Hercules" for many years. The locomotive named Hercules was actually number 3, and was supposedly too decrepit to make the final journey to the display site.

This engine is a valuable technology relic. It is one of the (only?) few examples of vacuum braking. Both the engine and coach are vacuum brake equipped.
