The red is the only thing original. Just the top 4 feet of each side, the steps and one toolbox. Everything else, the bottom 4 feet of each side, the back, the roof, the entire floor, bracing, the slope sheets, the trough, and one toolbox were fabricated new - almost entirely by our crew.Thanks |

Ihope people don't ridicule this question, but the first thing that comes to my mind is, why didn't you make a second K4s alongside the original? I understand money has been an issue, but it would have been sweet to see a sister built from scratch, using the prototype as a base for construction. |

Does the #1361 (or PRR K4's in general) have an integral cast frame bed/cylinders, or is the frame fabricated? I understand such large castings are extremely difficult (if not impossible) to make now. |

The frame is cast as one piece. I do not believe there is anyplace in the US where such a large casting can currently be produced. Thanks, |

I've creased my skull on the frame of 1361 more than once, and I can assure you it is actually several large forgings joined by cross braces. The cylinders are half-saddles bolted together and to the frame, and the one-piece pilot is a weldment. |

Assuming somebody wanted to build another K4 - or for that matter, any full size replica - duplicating 60 year old state of the art techniques is neither the critical deciding factor nor the most practical alternative. We can do so much more in terms of cutting and fabrication now than we could then that there is no reason a fabricated frame with high pressure water cut components wouldn't do just as well if not better.dave |
