The Grande Gold scheme is pretty wild, but genuine and historic. It was applied by the railroad when the 268 was sent east to the Chicago RR Fair, and remained after the engine returned. It was still so painted when the locomotive was used to tear up the branches out of Gunnison and some of the Marshall Pass line in 1955. Lots of people like it, including myself, and nearly every model steam locomotive offered for the Rio Grande is so painted.
