Railway Preservation in Asheville, NC?

I'm contemplating a possible job change to the Asheville, NC area, and I was wondering if anyone can give me an idea if there are any railroad related preservation projects happening nearby. I plan on getting involved at NCTM if I make the move, but I'd like to know if there's anything closer. Thanks!

You are closer to tourist railroads like Great Smoky Mountain, Tennessee Valley and Tweetsie. Blue Ridge Scenic RR is not far, nor the Doe River Gorge narrow gauge.

It is a great town and a fine mountain setting. Check Out Bill Stanley's Bluegrass and Barbecue downtown, and the winter holidays stuff at Biltmore House - tasting at the wineries always fun too. I don't know anybody who doesn't like that country.

Might try to track down the famous lost phantom Shay on Graybeard Mountain near Montreat. It is only visible to hunters not looking for it.

We'll be glad to have you at the NCTM. Even thought it is a little drive to get to us. There is one individual that lives in Asheville and voluteers at the museum.

Thanks, Paul. Staying active in the railway preservation community is a very inportant "intangible" that I'll consider as I weigh the pros and cons of relocating!

Of course, we're a lot farther East in NC than Asheville but also can offer lotsa opportunity to volunteer at the EC NRHS operation near Apex. (Actually its Bonsal but good luck finding that on a map.)

Frankly I think any rail museum should declare in advance if they have too much help so that folks would know not to move there...
