Railway Restoration Project 113 was presented a check in the amount of $3,500 by Megan Kennedy, the executive director of the First Federal Charitable Foundation. These funds will be used toward the restoration of the locomotive. A new tender tank has been fabricated and has been placed on the frame of the tender. Miss Liberty has been painted on it and the tender looks perfect. Another update and photos are forthcoming to this site. We are also looking to purchase a three chime steptop CNJ whistle for the project.

To get a little more specific so we can help better:Do you have a known appropriate CNJ whistle being offered for a set price (hopefully a "friendly" price), or are you still looking for a CNJ whistle to be purchased by or donated to the project?

We know of no CNJ whistle available at any price. We only know of one which is not for sale at this time and have measured it. We are specifically looking for a whistle with 8", 10" and 12" chimes with a steptop. There are no arches on it. The lip is flat like any single noter. It also will have fins between the chimes. The bowl will be somewhat squashed. We have found that official plans may be available and in a pinch could possibly make patterns and cast one up. Having experience in this area, the time consumed would not really be worth it and the new one would cost more than the original. That is why there arn't too many reproduction whistles yet. "Lost styrofoam" patterns are a possibility, but even this can get pricey. We had our stack and base cast this way. Among our volunteers are a number of available whistles which can be used on the locomotive. We would like to make the first music out of a restored CNJ boiler with a "real" CNJ whistle. Chances are that 113's whistle is still around.

You need to start asking in the right places. I'll start asking in the right places. Also, no use in trying to obtain/replicate a three-chime CNJ passenger whistle if the 113 only had a plain (i.e. one-note) "hooter". Ascertain what whistle you're looking for, and we'll take it from there. It's more likely that, instead of looking for something you may believe to be custom-built, the 113 wore the equivalent of a standard off-the-shelf component from an aftermarket supplier like Nathan, Crosby, Lunkenheimer, etc. and that any replacement whistle of the same type may suffice. (It's said that of 25 long-bell three-chime Nathan whistles worn by the UP Big Boys, about 400 are in collectors' hands; same story with the 278 Leslie A-200-156 air horns worn by PRR GG1's (and innumerable tugboats, freighters, etc.)

We have studied various photos of 113's whistle very carefully and have determined that this is the type of whistle on it and the one we want. It is not a hooter. This does not mean that 113 didn't wear a hooter sometime in her career. If you have access to to good photos of 113's left side and want to discuss it further we would be willing to do so. It is easy to determine that many of the camelback 0-6-0's had relatively short hooters. It takes a close study to accurately determine what 113's whistle looked like. I heard rumors that at the end of steam the CNJ fitted some of their switchers with "steamboat" sounding whistles taken from some Atlantics. We know of no other railroads which used this EXACT style of whistle that we want. and have not seen it illustrated in any books on whistles. Strasburg's 89 has a similar whistle, but not identical. I personally do not classify a whistle as passenger or freight even though some roads like the Pennsy and Reading generally followed a trend.Bernie Perch

Ed,Bob Kimmel Jr. has already talked to William Burke and got pictures of the 100 class switchers, but he didn't have any of the 111 class. We do have a number of pictures of the 113. It is a CNJ chime whistle that we wish to purchase.Thanx,Bernie

I know Bernie, I'm sure your aware of the CNJ. 3 chime that belongs to the late Steve Ward. So far his wife refuses to part with it. As I tried to buy it several times. I do think she would loan it out for any ocassion involving the 113.Pete Bransky at the WK&S. Had the whistle installed on the 65 at Steve Ward's memorial service. The last time it was sounded, it is beautiful! Maybe you were there and heard.Ed K. cp. Laurel Run

Ed,I am aware of Steve Ward's whistle and that is the one mentioned in the beginning of this series of messages. It is the one I measured when it was at Kempton. I did not hear it, but it probably was similar in tone to most medium length three chimes. We are also aware that it could possibly be borrowed for a steam up or two but have not approached Mrs. Ward personally about it. We are planning to compose a letter to her showing what is happening with Project 113 with photos, etc. with an eye toward possible purchase or donation. We know that you and possibly others would like to purchase and own this whistle and know that it could create ill will by trying to buy it. Basically, we would would like to own a CNJ whistle without any strings attached. That is why we are looking for another one.Bernie

Folks, it has been pointed out to the moderators that given the rising incidents of whistle and other memorabila theft in the East (including from such organizations as Strasburg and B&O Museum as well as SMS) it may be best that we no longer share names of whistle collectors on a public forum like this. I encourage anyone with suggestions to PM them to the CNJ 113 organization directly rather than posting them here--especially if the owner of the collection has not been advised that his/her/its name is being posted in public. Thanks for your understanding.

Len,I saw the post before it was deleated and sent you email addresses via PM. Did you get them? Since I am new to this forum, I may have done it incorrectly as I sent some to others and have not received replies from them either. This includes Superheater, so you also let me know if you didn't get the PM.Concerning the CNJ three chime whistle--is it possible you could contact your whistle friends to see if one would be available? Trading is a possiblity, but only if we would have what the other party desires. The 98 is the property of RRProject113 and was supposed to be in Minersville months ago. I have been asking Bob that question myself. In other posts, they mention mover delays. That is a ditto here.Bernie
