Santa Fe Budd Coach

I am trying to find a little history on a particular passenger car located at the Buckeye Central Scenic Railroad in Ohio. It is a fluted side lightweight stainless steel Budd coach, currently lettered for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and numbered 2432. However, on the signboards "Santa Fe" can be discerned under the MTA lettering. The car is in decent shape except the brake rotors are completely worn out, and the windows are gone.

I would like to find some data about the car, its built date, what service it was in on the Santa Fe, and a floor plan. Any help would be appreciated.

On the MTA the car was an 86 seat coach #2432. It's original configuration was a 52 seat coach ATSF #3148 built by Budd in 1941. The information is from a "Railway Car Passenger Annual" from about 1978........BRSPaul

I would like to do a repost on my response to the message - A Santa Fe Budd Coach. So lets start with the facts that have been covered already - The car is currently owned by The Buckeye Central Scenic Railroad. Its's original owner was the Santa Fe Railroad Company (ATSF #3148, 52 seats) , but it's last owner was Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA #2432, 86 seats) . I can't get any images to come up from the current owner's website, so you will just have to take a glance around their gallery (Try the areal views - they might help!) . Where is this car located on the railroads system (The station??) ? The link below is to the railroad's website!

I am a member of the BCSR and I know that they have expressed an interest in disposing of the car. The body is in good shape as is the interior. Its major problem is that the disc brake rotors are condemned which I believe means the car needs new wheelsets to be used in service again. The car does not fit their needs and is using up 80' of valuable track space in their runaround track.

So if there is anyone who could use this car, I am sure they would entertain an offer for it. Otherwise it might end up at the north end of the line and in a year or so completely destroyed by the local miscreants.

Built in 1941? WOW! She looks great for being 60 years old. I can't believe its that old.

That's why organizations hunt down stainless equipment. VIA acquired a substantial number of stainless cars 10 or so years ago. We had a 1941 Pullman Stainless articulated coach that was in excellent shape. It was exACR nee SP. It was over a carbon frame and the roof steel had needed some repair. If you want to buy a car the best I have looked at have always been Budd built stainless. They wear 50 years like only ten.....Paul
