C&S 647, shown after retirement in Denver in 1960, awaiting shipment to Houston, Texas to be cut up for scrap. It's last operation was in September 1959, on an excursion to Lyons, Colorado. These were built as saturated slide valve engines, but rebuilt at the Joint Shops in Denver in the 1920s.http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?f ... -60.jpgAnd C&S 807, formerly CB&Q 5508, bought by the C&S in 1957 and used only for the 1958-59 beet campaign. Seen here at Ara (Boulder) in the fall of 1958. I took what was to be my last cab ride on a steam locomotive for many years on this engine in 1959. Also shipped to Houston in early 1961 for scrap, it was the last heavy USRA 2-8-2 to operate.http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?f ... 58.jpgThis is what replaced them. Some of the SD9s are still running for BNSF, though I'm not sure if this is one of them:http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?february04/02-01-04/C+S821atDenverCO6-70MacOwenColl.jpg |
