Post subject:  Hyatt roller bearing inner races (sleeves)

Golden Gate RR Museum has just been notified that the entire ex-Navy base will be torn up for sewer & storm-sewer decontamination/replacement. We must move out by Feb 15 2006. Converting our friction-bearing cars to RB has suddenly become a high priority.We have Hyatt Roller-bearing (RB) wheelsets to retrofit many of our "Harriman" S.P. commute coaches. This will free up friction-bearing wheelsets with 5-1/2 x 10" plain journals. We have extra Hyatt RB boxes, but we need inner races (cylindrical sleeves that are shrunk onto the axle). Where are you going to be moving to? If it is a short distance in the Bay Area youl will probably be able to put a hospital train together and move the cars on plain bearings. The rule on bearings does not allow for interchange of cars between carriers. There is no rule that says they can't move on a single railroad. I would approach the host railroad about moving the collection in one large or two trains on the plain bearings with applicable speed restrictions before I went to the trouble of converting all of the wheelsets. The movement of plain bearings is up to the host railroad.

Move destination is TBD. Much work is being done to identify best option, and we are actively looking for inputs. In any case, converting to roller bearings may well open up move options that would otherwise be denied or delayed.
