Will there be any readers of this board at the Society for Industrial Archeology fall tour of Detroit starting Sept. 29?There may still be some seats available for this event, which is open to non-SIA members. It occurs to me that this may be your last chance to see some of the major industrial plants of early 20th-century Detroit before they succumb to decay and redevelopment. One feature of this tour is a half-day tour of the "Milwaukee Junction" area surrounding the former GTW engine terminal and junction of that name, which contains many survivors of the very first auto plants in North America. Also a boat tour of the Detroit and Rouge Rivers, and the Ford Rouge plant, and the stamping plant you saw in the Eminem movie.Many of these sites are included in the National Park Service's auto heritage area, to promote heritage tourism in Michigan auto-industry cities. This is a pretty showy example of this approach, if you're able to see any of its promotional materials.(In a weird preservation event known to but a few, Milwaukee Junction was the site of Michigan's last meet between steam locomotives, around 1980. GTW 6323 was being moved by its owner, the late Bob Johnson, to Illinois Railway Museum, and PM 1223 was moving at the same time from the Michigan State Fair grounds to display and cosmetic restoration at Grand Haven, Michigan.
