RE: CN 5288 A MUSEUM preserves and restores ARTIFACTS to their historically acurate appearance. A TOURIST RR or a private owner, fixes things up to suit their purpose. Although I'd prefer to see it restored to its original appearance, I'd much rather see it restored and running with cosmetic changes than see it sit outside and rust for 40 years. robsterne@hotmail.com |

Paint is cheap and doesn't last for more than a few years on operating locomotives. Let's not sweat such minor things compared to the bigger issues such as having another fair sized steam locomotive running on a relatively long trip at more than 15 MPH. TVRR has a fine shop and will do quality work on her and she will be a joy to ride behind whatever colors and letters are applied. The experience gained by visitors will more accurately replicate true branch line passenger train operation than many museum demonstrations. irondave@bellsouth.net |

There is some truth to what everyone has said above, but another aspect of this discussion is seldom mentioned, that being the spending of scarce resources on projects that are historically questionable. Such practice goes on a lot in our field. The 4-8-4 named "Ferroquous" is a well-known example, the "new" part of Steamtown is another. These funds, public or private, could have been spent much better on more historically accurate projects. Why not start in the right direction in the first place? I'm sure TVRM will repair and take good care of the 5288, But what will happen when it's worn out and used up again? Another lost and out-of-context orphan? Where do I think it should be? In the extant, full-circle CNR roundhouse at Charny, Quebec, which would have plenty of room for it and other woebegone CNR locomotives once the current scab repair company that is using it were relocated elsewhere. bobyar2001@yahoo.com |

Instead of engaging in amateur psychobabble about the mindset of this comment, wouldn't it be easier to use the money being spent to buy a hostage on what you want in the first place? Save your anger, it'll be better spent when the US and Canada find a common enemy in the Sabre rattling regime in China that is finishing its plans for war. |
