Long time lurker, finally had a question to ask on my own....Can anyone shed some light on the problem which apparently happened at IRM in the last 2 weeks which involved the Nebraska Zephyr ?I first caught mention of this on the Yahoo IRM Groups, where the same question was asked, but thus far, not answered. IRM is apparently officially not saying anything (as is their right) until the incident has been investigated for cause and effect. In the meantime, people who are not able to visit the museum are left to wonder what happened, was anyone hurt, how extensive is the damage.I myself live only an hour from the museum, but am out of town for the past 2, and next 2 weeks.I understand IRM's policy and desire to keep the rumor mill at bay, but in this one man's opinion, some accurate information generally tends to fend off the inaccurate.Any info appreciated for both myself and others not in the immediate area.

I also have seen the IRM Yahoo messages and wondered what happened. However, I would ask that any reply or information posted here be done so with respect to the situation, whatever it may be, as well as the individual(s) and organization involved. I think a brief statement of what happened, no names or blame assessed, and an equally brief description of any damage, (preferably from one of the many IRM regulars to this forum) should be enough to satisfy anyone's "need to know". This topic will be monitored heavily for the next several days in order to ensure facts are presented, not rumor or speculation, and with an eye to preserving the rights and privacy of both the organization, and any individual(s) involved. Let's all try to remember that the vast majority of railroad volunteers are just that, volunteers and not railroad professionals. And railroad professionals themselves are subject to accidents as well. Thank you in advance for everyone's consideration and cooperation.

I'm a lurker on the IRM Yahoo Group too since it's the easiest way to keep track of the museum from 2 states away. I can understand not wanting to release any details yet but a brief statement such as stating it "experienced minor cosmetic damage" or whatever happened would go a long ways to keeping the rumor mill from getting out of hand. Without any statement at all I can do is assume the damage ranges anywhere from a ding in the nose of the E-5 to the whole trainset laying on it's side.

To all,I have been contacted off-list from an IRM member who I consider to be a known and reliable source. I will paraphrase his account, giving whatI consider to be the pertinent details everyone seems to desire, and leave the rest to the crew at IRM to sort out as need be.The basic story is that during a non-revenue switch move, a switch was split. Some damage was done to 2 cars of the 5 car trainset. This damage, while enough to cause IRM to issue the statement Boyd passed along from their website to cease Zephyr operations for the rest of the year,is not "fatal", ie, it is worse than a dent, but repairable. The Silver Pilot E unit was not involved in the incident and is apparently unaffected.Having been involved in a derailment myself during operations at a local museum, I can state that this is amongst the worst feelings in the world for the volunteer(s) involved. Having said that, I think it's very important to keep this fact in mind, accidents happen in the real world as well as the museum world. The only way to have this to never have happened is very simple, to have the Zephyr (as well as all the rest of IRM's exhibits) stuffed and mounted, and never operated.Let's let IRM handle the rest of this subject as need be, to do what they can to help prevent any such incidents in the future. For now, show your interest and support by sending IRM a check to help with the repairs, no matter how minor or major, as we all know, this stuff costs money.

A message from Barb Lanphier, IRM President, concerning the Zephyr incident on September 10, 2005.On Saturday, September 10, 2005, IRM’s Nebraska Zephyr was involved in a switching accident while being moved into Yard 4 for a maintenance inspection. The train trailed through a spring switch and backed up, causing significant damage to the adjacent ends of power car Venus and following coach Vesta. E5 Locomotive 9911A Silver Pilot was not a part of the train when the incident occurred. No passengers were on board and no injuries were sustained.Professionals from the rail industry were called in to evaluate the damage; plans for repair are being formulated. All Zephyr operations for the remainder of the 2005 season have been cancelled. Future operation is dependent on repair of the train. An investigative team made up of members from the IRM Operating and Internal Combustion Departments went into action immediately following the accident. All crew members were suspended pending the results of the investigation. After an intense and thorough investigation, a hearing was held on September 17, 2005. At that hearing, members of the operating crew were assessed discipline according to their level of responsibility in the accident.Further inquiries may be directed to Jim Nauer, Asst. Superintendent of Operations or James Kolanowski, Curator of the Internal Combustion Department.
