Just a few highlights of recent activity at National Capital Trolley Museum.Contractors are busy at work installing a dry-pipe sprinkler system in our remaining car barn. (Coincidentally this week marks the second anniversary of the fire.) The project was funded by a grant from our county Arts and Humanities Council and also includes a smoke detection system wired to a central monitoring station. The grant also funded a smoke detection sytem in the visitors center. Each morning the cars stored in the barn are moved outside in various configuations to permit access to the interior of the building for the installers. So far it has not rained.In August, we took delivery of STIB 17, a work car from Brussels, Belgium. The car was acquired in trade for STIB 1048, the second car that remained at the Grand Hyatt in Orlando after they stopped operations in 1996. STIB 17 is a standard Brussels single-truck car modified as a street sweeper. The interior is fitted out with various compartments to carry tools. We decided to acquire the car to serve as a replacement for the work car and storage function previously represented in DCTS 0509, one of the cars destroyed in the fire. STIB 17 was shipped with its pantograph removed (it did come with the car) so we have not had a chance to operate the car on the railway. The two Brussels cars ride on Brill 21E trucks equipped with roller bearings. STIB 1069 is on the railroad, but awaits revenue service pending further clean up work (varnish, etc.).Photos of the above activities will follow as time permits.Wesley |
