Viking Equipment in Ohio put an ad on railswap stating that they have two ALCOs that are going to get cut up if no new home found by end of week. The ad claims they ran (didn't say how well) in the past few years. Perhaps with all the discussion about 1st gen disels @ steamtown, we can save a couple in danger. The broker is also stating he'll waive his fee to save. Look on www.railswap.org |

I don't mean to cast ill will to anyone, but awhile back I was offered some cars by Viking Equipment in response to an ad. The email from the person that responded was full of bad spelling and the grammer was sub-elementry school level. Based on this I questioned whether this person was even an adult, let alone reputable. They seemed to have very little specific information about the cars and had clearly never seen them; they were also very vauge about dollar amounts. This person was either barely literate or a child. Either way I decided they were unreliable. Just a friendly warning based on personal experience; it is possible I only heard from one ill informed employee. |

I know the person to whom you refer. He is young, but he is sincere in that he wants to get a rail equipment brokerage going. I have talked with him about the two Alcos, apparently an S-2 and an S-4, and the owner is simply "tired of looking at them". I stated that if there had been more lead time that perhaps something could be worked out, but two weeks to buy and ship a locomotive is unrealistic. Give this young guy a chance. His name is James, and someday as he learns the ropes he will be an asset to the rail community. Tod Engine Foundation rickrailrd@aol.com |

I inquired about them and was given a price of $8500.00 each or trade for a caboose. Now surely one of us can come up with a little cash or a caboose to buy some time for the locomotives. Stuart Frisco 1506 gnufe@apex.net |

Yeah, I have been watching this thread for a while since I am in GA and would like to get one of these for a museum but the time frame is simply impossible. Just getting the board to agree to an acquisition proposal, fund it, and arrange transportation will take a couple months minimally. Futhermore, stuff that is about to be scrapped shouldn't be priced at higher than scrap value. Many owners find the tax benefits of donation to a 501C3 worth more than scrap value and offer to donate instead. I realize there isn't a percentage of tax writeoff available to a broker, although some credit for the value of his donated professional services to help arrange the donation isn't out of the question. The payment of an honorarium - say $500 or so - is possible as well. Next time a situation like this comes along let's be more realistic and timely and maybe we can do some good. Alternatively, if the short fuse on this situation stops burning for a bit, let me know and maybe I can work something out. Dave irondave@bellsouth.net |
