Hi Kathy, I'm glad to hear there is a local movement to help preserve that locomotive. I visited Nahma looking for it and got some photos of the "Five Spot" back in 1996. Back then it looked pretty rough, but quite intact. I've heard there's a fence up around it now, so that may help keep people off of it to lessen the deterioration. Below is a website that may be able to help you in your research: http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/RRHXHome.htmand a related message board, which boasts many knowledgable people within the state's RR historical community: http://www.michiganrailroads.com/MichRR ... eHX.htmYou can try those places, maybe somebody there can answer your questions or provide you with details. I remember also back in the late '80's-early '90's sometime, WDIV channel 4 (NBC) in Detroit had some kind of points of interest around the state, which if I remember correctly was a short segment they broadcasted with the news. One was of Nahma and mentioned the railroad, the logging industry, the old ballroom and bowling alley I think. I never would have imagined that up there as it's a pretty quiet town nowadays compared to what it is must've been back in the day!!! The segments were narrated by the King of Detroit's news back then- Mort Crim. Mr. Crim has his own production company now and no longer does the Local 4 newscasts, but if you do a search for either WDIV or Mort Crim, you might try dropping an email or making a phone call to see if someone somewhere has a copy of that broadcast on tape somewhere. It was VERY interesting and you can tell someone did their homework! I dont' remember offhand exactly what it said about the locomotive or the railroad, but for a historical background, it might be worth a look. I've been wanting to contact WDIV myself, regarding that segment but never remember to do so. IF you do, please let us know what you find. My first bet would be to try those two links above. Someone there should be able to point you in the right direction!God bless, and good luck!
