Bob: She intact. When the locomotive was placed indoors it was done on the condition that if the museum failed or the display was not respectful of her heritage, the Bangor and Aroostook could remove her. The dispaly is well kept and the loco is in excellent hands. She stands with a retired wooden boxcar and MEC caboose. Actually, the loco was placed and the building put around her. At the time, BAR was in the middle of a motive power change over. It's legend in the railfanning community how the BAR sold off it's F3's and most of the BL2's rather than cut them up. One F3 remains on the property of the successor company, Montreal, Maine, and Atlantic. It is serviceable, but not operable at this time. The MMA knows it's value and holds onto it as the treasure it has become. The BL2 at Cole's was lettered "American Railfan" for several trips prior to being placed. Gives you an idea of how BAR treated railfans who chased and documented their fleet. Asking permission (at the time) was usually greeted with a "yes". |

A friend and I visited Northern Maine Junction some years ago and were photographing an engine that was poorly lit - half in sunlight, half in shade. Without anyone saying anything, one of the BAR guys came out of the roundhouse and moved the engine a few feet so that the lighting was better - i.e. all in the sunshine. The BAR was plainly a railroad that treated their equipment and its enthusiasts well. It's good to hear that preservation efforts continue.-John |
