Hi,Do any of you remember the show Casey Jones? It starred Alan Hale. What locomotive was used? It kind alooks Like a Sierra Loco, but I don't know. I bought a dvd off of ebay with some episodes on it. The show is from 1957 or so.Stuart

I first saw it in 1958. Alan Hale was Casey and Dub Taylor was Wally, the fireman. It was all filmed on the Sierra, with No. 3 the main star, but with occasional appearances of No. 28. I think it was a syndicated show, somewhat like other action series of the time like Whirlybirds and Rescue 8. I only remember it for one season, so there were probably not too many episodes made. I'd like to see it again. It was not as hokey as the later Hooterville show. In a world devoid of the internet and video/DVD, it was a rare glimpse of steam trains on TV. When, as a kid, you often did not have the fifty cents to buy Railroad or Trains magazine, it was pretty special to see such shows.

Hi Bob,I found a dvd with some episodes from :Petticoat Junction" at Cracker Barrell. They were pretty good, too. I'm 31 and I had never heard of "Petticoat Junction" or "Casey Jones", but after watching them, I'd like to watch more. Stuart

Ah.........the young! Petticoat Junction made me a fan of Sierra#3 many times over! As you look at the opening credits,you wil realize something very ovious.....she barely smokes at all,trademark of a good fireman!

Sierra #3 was the main star, but then there were Bobby Jo, Betty Jo, Billie Jo, and...were there others in that cast? Both shows had similar problems, with ideas that the average viewer couldn't wrap their minds around. Bandits versus Casey Jones, and a long lost steam locomotive on a long lost branch of a major railroad. Petticoat Junction had a railroad President who loved the locomotive and the town, toadied to by a Vice-President who hated the locomotive and the town - for no particular reason, either. Hey, I think his name was Al Perlman (but I might be wrong)!

When I was a kid, they used to run reruns of Superman and other oldies, I can remember crying when 'Superman' ran into the color episodes...which replaced a GS class steamer used in the B&W episodes with aa F unit on the "...more powerful than a locomotive!" part of the theme.

Hi Bob,I guess it made an impression on me too! I was only five at the time and yet I vividly remember Alan Hale as Casey and Sierra #3. I didn't know anything about the Sierra Railroad at the time, but I sure remembered that the "Hooterville Cannonball" was the same locomotive that Casey Jones had used.Never underestimate the power of a childhood memory... Now all we have to do is keep our various preservation projects alive and healthy long enough for the "Thomas" generation to grow up. Best Regards,Glenn

The 'Thomas' generation already has! At least, the 1st wave of them. The show first came on as 'Shining Time Station' with live action/Thomas segments, starting about 1991. I was a big fan of them...only being 10 at the time, perhaps even a little old.

Keep in mind also that the original Thomas books were written between 1945 and 1972. My dad used to read them to me as bedtime stories when I was a kid, I'm 33 now. Preservation seemed to be a common theme in the original Rev. Awdry stories, especially the later ones that were written as British Rail was dieselizing. I guess you could say it left a lasting impression on me.
