Since the eccentric rod is missing I assume this is a photo of the 592 on her way to the B&O museum. John Bohon

I found a postcard of this shot which I gave to the B&O Museum--FWIW, that's the so-called "Royal Blue" coach behind the locmotive, and according to the postcard caption, both were indeed on the way to the then-new B&O Transportation Museum.

The date was May 1, 1954 (I was there), and it was indeed a ceremonial special run to deliver the 592 to the museum. CNJ 1709, an Alco RS3, took the 592, the "Royal Blue Line" coach, and CNJ diesel 1000 to Bound Brook. It was preceded by a 2-car RDC train to get the fans and others out to Bound Brook. The 592 was then turned over to the Reading for a less-ceremonious trip to Phila. where B&O took it on to Baltimore, also without ceremony. The 1000 was returned to work in the Bronx until it was later donated to the museum.Herb Harwood

The camelback steam engine had been in service until not long before the photo, but what is the story behind the coach's survival?

Herb, the link below is to a Hal Carstens shot in the R&R files of CNJ 1000 at Communipaw in bunting. Do you recognize this is the 592 hand-off trip, or maybe the 1000 hand-off?

Thanks ....Mike

Pretty amazing that she was saved at all, considering she's an "Atlantic", and they were actively running "ten-wheelers" in daily service. Pity that Don Wood's locomotive was hustled off to scrap so soon after her last run and celebration of steam service.

Here are a couple current photos of each engine as seen in June, 2010 at the B&O Railroad Museum:

CNJ #592
I was told my a museum curator that the engine will not be moving any time soon as it is too heavy for the turntable it had crossed to be placed on display.
