Every so often it hits me the incredible number
and variety of steam locomotives Blount saved at
the end of steam. From UP Big Boy 4012, to B&M
3713. All those CP pacifics, 2317, 1246, 1278,
1293...Norfolk & Western 1218, NKP 759, Reading
T-1's, the list goes on and on. And TVRM's newest
addition, the 5288. There's a nice shot of 5288
at the following link.

Nelson Blount was a great preservationist who dipped into his family fortune without questioning the "profit" base. Without Nelson, we'd all be vastly poorer in spirit. My first ride in a locomotive cab was 2-8-0 #15 (ex-Rahway Valley), with Nelson at the throttle.

It's a shame other collections, like the Louisianna Eastern, hadn't met Nelson Blount.

I knew Nelson and decades ago at Bellows Falls he had already spent $700,000 and wasn't done yet! Todays $$ that would be Millions.

Thanks Steve, I too have fond memories of climbing all over Blount's Steam Collection up in Bellows Falls, VT when I was a boy. Thanks to Him, the wonder and fascination of steam locomotives and railroading in general were etched in my mind forever...look, they've already turned his collection over to ( and into) a National Historical Site, how big of a leap could it be to proclaim a National " Steam Day", or "F.Nelson Blount Day"? I'm with you Steve! You've got 2 more votes...one from me, and one from my Dad!
