All of a sudden the B&O Museum roundhouse roof collapse looks totally irrelevant by comparison.  25 locos, including the creme de la creme of German rail preservation. Pictured above is "Der Adler", the German version of our "John Bull"....... and a 2-10-2........

Sad isnt the word. After the trolley barn fire in DCwe all should have had the wake-up call.My usual 'time for collections to be indoors"needs to be amended to "..and with sprinklersystem installed."Also an unfortunate example of the dangersof keeping a collection in an old building.It really is shocking to see those pictures. |

"Der Adler" is, I believe, a 1930s built replica. I do not think the original exists.The other steam locos I have noted from published pictures and news reports are:01 150 standard DR 2 cylinder 4-6-2 built 193523 105 standard DB 2 cylinder 2-6-2 built 1959 (the last steam loco built for the DB in the then West Germany) 45 010 standard DR 3 cylinder 2-10-2 built 1941 (a unique loco from a small but not particularly successful class)86 457 standard DR 2 cylinder 2-8-2T built 1942It is possible that some or all of them could be cosmetically restored. The damage to some of the diesel and electric locos and railcars appears terminal.I have read that the were problems regarding finance for the Nurnberg museum. I believe that the DB were responsible for it and were not very forthcoming given their deficits. I suspect that there was no sprinkler system.Also worrying is that most museum groups in Germany use a similar style of semi roundhouse (former loco depot) for storage and operational base for their collections. I hope that they do have sprinklers installed.......Jim L. |

We just finished installation of a dry-pipe sprinkler system in our remaining carbarn at National Capital Trolley Museum at a cost of $45,000 for a 3,000 square foot building. The County provided grant funding for the installation. Fortunately we had public water service to our site, and the water main ran close to the building. The availability of a water supply helped keep the cost down in terms of additional costs that would be necessary to hook the sprinkler into the water system. We also had available an enclosed, heated room within the barn that could house the control valves for the sprinkler system. The availability of that space also reduced our costs.Bottom line: installation of sprinklers is not a cheap process when you look at the normal resources needed to maintain operations. Wesley |
