This railway was in Brazil and was, I'm fairly sure, metre gauge. As the only detailed book I possess on Brazilian Railways is about articulated steam locomotives I've no idea whether any survive.G

If I recall correctly, I think I got a glimpse of a similar 4-8-4 (probably meter gauge) in a railway junkyard in Bolivia on one of the Trains Unlimited Tours tapes. I know Chile had a few broad gauge 4-8-4s, but can't tell if this is one of them. Nice looking locomotive, though. Would like to know more about it.

There were some French built 2-8-4's and 4-8-4's (GELSA consortium) from the early 1950's for Brazil. At least one of 2-8-4's ended up in Bolivia in the 1970's so other "imports" cannot be ruled out...G

In a book "Brazilian Steam Album IV - North and South" published by Railhead Publications of Canton Ohio in 1990 is a good photograph of VFRGS no 1018, an Alco 4-8-4 stated to be works no 72947/1945.The phot was taken at Caequi, no date given.The VFRGS was a metre gauge division of the RFFSA which was located in the far south of the country around Porto Alegre."World of South American Steam" published in 1974 by Roy Christian and Ken Mills (an amazing gricer's guide to steam in South America) states that major dieselisation of the VFRGS in 1968 caused the retirement of mallets, 4-8-4's and Garratts.The book also lists three Alco 4-8-4's in Bolivia nos 851-853. A photo of the front end of 852 stickting out of a loco shed doorway is included. The Bolivian 4-8-4's were second hand from the Noroeste do Brazil. They were probably from the same order as those for the VFRGS.
