I believe the locomotive and combine have been under shelter of one form or antoher ever since they were placed on display with the opening of Mammoth Cave National Park in the 1930s. The Kentucky Railway Museum conducted a cosmetic restoration for the National Park Service about 4-5 years ago, and the pieces were in good condition, just needing some paint and touch up work. The only thing missing were the original Baldwin Builders plates which disappeared long ago. The restoration included replicas. Of particular interest is that the passenger car is equipped with vaccum brakes, and I believe the locomotive used steam brakes. |
