Post subject:  The first experience

The first time I was ever aboard a live steam locomotive was on this engine, in September 1957, when a friendly old fireman (he was actually younger than I am now) saw a skinny 10 year old looking up at the cab and invited me up. The 806 had been bought by the C&S from the CB&Q just a few months before, along with five other heavy USRA Mikados, for $10,000 each. The 804, 805 and 806 were put into service first, and only operated through the fall/winter beet campaign of 1957/58. The 807 and 809 ran the following year, 1958/59. Q 5509, meant to be C&S 808, had boiler problems and furnished parts for the others. The 806 is already out of service here in Denver, in late-1958:http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?march04/03-20-04/C+S806atDenverCO11-15-58.jpgAnd the 809 is also out of service here in 1960. All would be towed to Houston for scrap in early 1961:http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?march04/03-20-04/C+S809atDenverCO6-5-60.jpg
