Out of curiosity, what is the way that one would go about putting a temporary paintjob over existing lettering? Is it possible to wax the paint underneath, put on a water soluable paint, and then wax over it? I know engines like the 4449 have been temporarily relettered for excursions, and the new lettering power washed off after the excursion. Any ideas how this is done?Thanks in Advance, Taylor |

A few years back, John Rimmasch had my son and I, prep GW75 for a charter. The route we took was to cover the "HEBER VALLEY RAILROAD" on the tender sides with black Contac brand shelving paper. (NOTE: you typically will not find the color black in the housewares section of your local Wallymart or Target store--I found it through a educational supply house on the internet). Vinyl lettering "GREAT WESTERN" was applied to the contact paper. The result was satisfactory for most of the charter in that the majority of the day the lighting was "flattened" by the clouds/overcast. Toward the afternoon, as the sun burned through and brightened, the difference in the sheen on the tender's areas of original paint and the area of the "coverup" were noticible. If I were to do it over again, I'd apply a dulling clearcoat over the finished job to even the difference in sheen--this should easily come off afterwards with a good lacquer thinner.sc 'doc' lewis |

As I recall the art director from the movie company didn't like the color scheme on the F and wanted some changes, so - if memory serves - they first covered the offending color with contact cement and then used latex paint over that - the idea being that they could just peel the whole thing off when done. It may work well in Hollywood, but we had two guys with brushes, scrapers, and a pressure washer working most of the night to return the unit to it's pre-stardom appearance.For lettering, they made up large magnetic sheets with a new road name, which worked well until they encountered one of the loco's side panels that had been replaced with aluminum . . .
