Unfortunately, they did not save any of these, but the last one wasn't scrapped until about 1950. Today, the D&H Rutland Branch is owned by Vermont Rail Systems and busier than 20 years ago, with welded rail, lots of freight traffic and even an Amtrak train (the D&H passenger service ended about 1940). In that first picture, is the headlight actually resessed into the smokebox door, as it appears?

Yes,, the headlight is recessed, as was done on many other D&H locomotives. The head of the D&H at the time was L.F. Loree, who had been impressed by the sleeker lines of locomotives in England, and had his own engines rebuilt with similar features.
