Aloha -A couple more Hawaiian questions......Where are the remaining HRy Company Kalakaua cars located and what is there status? I believe 1 or 2 came to Southern California along with the "Leslie" (0-4-2T, BLW, cn4096, 1879) and a couple others went from the HRy to the KRR on Mauai - is one still there and stored along with "Claus"?? BTW - the LK&P cars are patterned after these cars.At Grove Farm, is there a plan to operate the locomotives on the former LP trackage that is being relaid on a regular basis? How long is the track currently and how long might it be relaid??Has the Kauai Plantation Railway started construction? Any news, corrections, and updates out there??Aloha |

Originally there were 6 Ransom and Rapier teakwood coaches built in 1880 or ‘81 on the Hawaii Railway at Kohala on the Big Island. King Kalakaua rode the train from Mahukona to Kohala in May 1883 for the dedication of the King Kamehameha statue. The First Class car he rode in was protected and preserved at the Hawaii Railway shops in Mahukona up until the Railway was closed and the REAL Kalakaua car was shipped to Honolulu along with #5 and the Leslie. The Kalakaua car was given space in the OR&L roundhouse. The roundhouse was razed in 1960. Linley Bothwell, a friend of the Dillingham family arranged to buy the Leslie and was given “custodial care” of the Kalakaua car, moving both to his ranch in Woodland Hills, California. Dillingham Corp. retained ownership. In the late 1960s, title to all of the Dillingham railroad equipment was deeded to Bishop Museum and moved to the museum grounds.Mr. Bothwell was scheduled to visit the Kahului RR shops in May of 1986, unfortunately he passed away before that trip. On his demise, legal custody of the Kalakaua car reverted back to Dillingham Corp. which no longer existed, so the title went to Bishop Museum. Since A&B Sugar Museum was about 3/4ths complete with the restoration of Claus, Bishop Museum gave A&B the car for display with the Claus on Maui.I went to the mainland to load the Kalakaua car on a Matson flatrack. My buddy George Sapp and I loaded it in about 2 days. The car is now in cocooned storage next to Claus in a sugar warehouse on Maui. There are no plans to display the locomotive or car.Interestingly, the Leslie was originally on Maui working for KRR. About 1884, the Leslie was traded to Hawaii Rwy for the Kinau and 2 of the R&R teakwood coaches. Leslie and Claus are identical locomotives being Baldwin class no. 6-10-1/3C-9 (1879) and 6-10-1/3C-11 (1882) respectively. We have photos of Claus pulling the 2 teakwood cars from Hawaii Rwy.The attached link to a Honolulu Advertiser articleHONOLULU ADVERTISER ARTICLEeven though it is almost 2 years old is still relevant.Grove Farm museum has about 1600 feet of track down and is currently laying more. Relocation of any steam locomotives from Puhi to Lihue has not been decided. The Kilohana Project started grading their right-of-way about 6 weeks ago and have heard they expect to open in May of 2006. |

Hi -Thanks for the update - I thought I had read that a couple of the R&R 4 wheel HRR cars were traded to the KRR around the time of the locomotive trade also. I had assumed that the one stored with the "Claus" was one of them, I did not realize it was the that was with the "Leslie". Thanks for the update. Any update on the current status of the "Leslie" - is it stored, part of the estate, or has been sold?? Over on Maui the "Paia" of the HC&S was a 0-4-4 Porter that had been on display in the late 1950s in Baldwin Park (In Paia?) - it seems to have disapeared without a trace - anyone know its fate? There are a few pictures around of her in the park. Aloha |

A&B Sugar Museum has photos of the PAIA at Baldwin Park being scrapped sometime in the '60s.Three flatracks with 2 flatcars each showed up on Kauai on the Monday barge. Obviously for Kilohana. |
