I know there are some that frequent this forum that have experience with this type activity, so I am seeking your assistance. I need to move a de-trucked SW-9 body from Miami, FL to S. Georgia. Principal routing would likely be I-95, I-10, I-75.I am looking for contacts or references for experienced heavy-duty over the road haulers that would be able to provide this service. If you have any information that would help me in this situation I would appreciate it very much. If you have moved equipment this way and can give me a ballpark cost for doing it, that would be appreciated also. I know hauling distance is a variable, so the distance moved would be helpful.As an alternative, any idea what it might cost to move this locomotive with or without trucks as a flatcar load on CSX? I saw a posting not to long ago that had a photo of an Army or Air Force SW-8 on a flatcat out west somewhere.Lastly, any idea what a standard AAR switcher truck, complete with traction motors, brake cylinders, etc, would weigh? I have the total in-service weight for this locomotive, but need to estimate the weight sans trucks.Thanks for your help and suggestions.

The company in Al. Is call either Moving Iron or Hauling Iron, They Moved a 80 G.E. from Calf. to Ohio for me and were great to deal with. (I have there card in my Rolodex at work and can post it Monday) As is Mike, We've used him as well. You'll do good with both. As of late CSX has been a major Pain in The A@#!!!! They admit they don't want to move loco's period. I'm not talking old ones I'm talking currently blue carded SD-40's and the like. We won't even talk about the switcher that they would not even inspect to move. If you can't use NS Call one of the above and truck it. Sad to say that but it's the truth.

I second said motion based on personal experience. They're great once it's actually moving, but getting stuck in a yard that doesn't have enough locos or just getting it accepted by CSX is the problem.Unfortunately, I'm acquainted with the very SW9 in question, as well as its location. He'd need CSX just to get it to the only other option, FEC. Trucking is absolutely the only option, sadly.

The AAR switcher truck complete weight is 17 tons each. That picture you mentioned in you post was a SW-8 That I loaded and moved for CSRM. We also used the same flat car and loading tie down method to move a SW- 1 to the museum. We built ramps and loaded locomotives on there own wheels. These were both 100 ton locomotives that could be loaded on standard "pool" flat cars . Over 100 ton loads have to use heavy capacity flat cars with extra charges. GIve the expensive tie down requirements of most railroads and the freight rates. Its always good to get cost for the move both by rail and by truck and go from there.

I guess it is all related to whom you work with at CSX. We had essentially no problem with CSX and CSX clearance on the tie down of the NYC 6894 steam locomotive. Aside from the locomotive taking a strange path to Connersville, we had no problems with CSX moving our SD10.We did have more than a few problems with NS in moving roller bearing Baldwin switchers though. Sorry Robert, I wasn't trying to second guess you, I saw AL and thought of the company we used called Movin' Iron out of Red Bay phone # 1-800-896-8802. David how did you get a SD-10 moved on CSX??? they played aound so bad we ended up useing CN to get our 2 off the INRD. We never had a problem with CSX till Jim Foley retired. That man got things done. I even had problems with thier lease units we service. As power short as they are you think they would have got them back quick.
