Was this with RDCs, or a steam train?http://photos.nerail.org/showpic/?photo=2005112017163215193.jpg&bydate%3A15

Sigh.Brother Yarger, remind me to introduce you to the concept of an Internet search engine. Pick one.http://www2.townonline.com/swampscott/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=363944"For almost 50 years, there has been no plaque, no memorial, no public recognition at all of the single-most deadly incident in local history. That will change at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Swampscott Depot on Railroad Avenue, when a monument will be dedicated in memory of the 13 people who died in the Swampscott train wreck of Feb. 28, 1956. Almost two years ago, three men went before the Board of Selectmen, explaining their plan for a plaque or some kind of recognition of the train wreck and the 13 victims who lost their lives that day when, in the midst of a howling snowstorm, a Boston & Maine Railroad Buddliner (a self-propelled passenger coach) crashed into the rear of a halted passenger train."Chuck Crouse's "Budd Car: The RDC Story" gives details, including Buddliner 6150 and a nine-car diesel train. Apparently the engineer of the RDC was operating too fast for conditions and overran a red signal.A second RDC accident followed the Swampscott wreck by 71 minutes at Revere, when a pair of RDCs carrying survivors rear-ended a five-car diesel train in a deep cut, injuring 143, 23 seriously.

Budd Cars used Rolokron wheel-slip devices, which were designed to prevent the relatively light cars from sliding during brake applications. Worked "kind of" like modern automotive ABS brakes, but with far less predictable results. While restoring Susquehanna RDC M-1, we often heard stories from former New York Susquehanna & Western engineers about how "slippery" the Budd Cars could be in wet or rainy weather, with numerous accounts of wheels slipping during brake applications on wet, icy, or leaf-covered tracks, and the Rolokrons releasing the brakes, and the cars rolling right past signals and stations. Ultimately, the Rolokrons were disconnected...If I had to guess, this was still early enough in the RDC's service careers that Rolokrons were still in use, the engineers at the controls weren't familiar with how to deal with them in bad weather, and paid the price.
