If it is any consolation, it still looks better than 2700 in Dennison. Image from steamlocomotive.com for illustration purposes only.

Neither of these locomotives look that bad to me. Both appear structurely sound and the asbestos has been removed. Both need the rods put back on, some reassembly, a little cosmetic work, and then a paint job. I think it would be fairly easy to make these engines into good static displays.I think we should all be glad 2700 survives. After being severly neglected at her original display location the C&O refurbished her and returned the 2700 to display in St. Albans. When St. Albans decided they did not want the 2700 another caretaker surfaced. How many engines are lucky enough to get three chances to beat the scrapper? John Bohon |

John, I agree. Just because a locomotive looks lousy on the outside doesn't mean it's a lost cause. I agree that water left in a boiler over a winter can be the kiss of death, even that has been dealt with. Steam locomotives can be repaired after all but the most structure-mangling disasters. After seeing the locomotive in Lynchburg and the cosmetic restoration it underwent, I'd believe most locomotives are redeemable. Parts are expensive to replace, pumps and generators require expensive rebuilding, but I don't see a reason other than money that stands in the way of putting things to right in almost every locomotive that is accessible. 2700 could be rebuilt, assuming she fell into the care of competant caretakers with drive and vision. |
