Is there any evidence that the Pioneer was originally Utica & Schenectady #7 4-2-0 Baldwin 1837 ? I've seen this written more than once, but have never seen anything that flat out says it isn't.James

The below issue of Railroad Model Craftsman has a good article on the Pioneer, that indicated it had been a Utica & Schenectady engine before coming to Illinois. Would be nice if it could be reunited with its replica tender, and too bad its former trailing coach was recently destroyed. Reportedly, the coach was largely a 1940s 2x4 and plywood creation, probably on the frame of an old wooden caboose, but at this late date, it still had historical value, as an icon of a time when railroads still believed in themselves.http://www.index.mrmag.com/tm.exe?opt=I ... t=3&sort=A

The R&LHS 1938 roster of C&NW steam locomotives indicates it as such. It appears that C&NW either contributed to the roster or allowed the compiler full access to records. Additionally, I recall that C&NW's book "Yesterday and To-Day" from 1910 details the road's early years, including the acquisition of the Pioneer from the Michigan Central, which had acquired it from U&S.If the U&S reference is in error, the source was likely C&NW.More info:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_(locomotive)Erich
