I think this little 4-4-0 pulled the last CP steam train before the Hudson revival, in 1960. Exactly right, Bob. She was nearly incinerated in a fire which destroyed an extraordinary number of historic wooden cars. At the time, she was an operable locomotive. The fire destroyed the wooden tender support boards and locomotive pilot beam. I guess the original cab boards were incinerated too. The tender had coal in it. (sigh) What can one say? The fire could not be proven as arson, but another user of the sheltering building had recently put a large number of valuable boats, cars, etc. inside. The building went up as soon as he was finished, and an investigation later showed he was in debt, up to his neck. It stunk. Insurance paid out, but the loss to the Salem and Hillsborough was incalculable. They lost Diesels, an antique observation car, cabooses, and more. The little 29 was oiled to prevent extra damage by rusting and corrosion, making her look worse than she actually was. Eventually she was swapped to CP for a Diesel, I believe. S&H owns a n ex-CN 2-8-0 which is also operable, but is restricted due to insurance or boiler documentation issues. Something like that. Railroad preservation was going strong at S&H, but this one event set them back horribly. And extraordinarily sad story.
