The December issue of Smithsonian magazine contains an excellent feature about O. Winston Link's famous 1956 photograph of an N&W freight steaming past a drive-in movie theatre in Iaeger, WV. Part of the scene included Willie Allen seated in a convertible with his arm around Dorothy Christian. Link paid Willie Allen $10 for the pose. The article includes a picture of Link with his camera gear along with associate George Thom as well as present day color photos of Allen and Christian (now Dorothy Riffe who married Willard Riffe a year after the Link photo).Sloan |

Always nice to see Mr. Link recognized for his accomplishments, and Smithsonian is certainly a nice place to be acknowledged.I read for the first time (in that article) that he made two exposures that night; one of the screen and the other of the train roaring by. The image of the movie on the screen was "fixed" afterward -- as so many flash bulbs washed out the screen during the principle exposure. Who needs photoshop, eh? |
