This scrapping still rankles and hurts the soul of rail preservationists. Between the stubborness of METRA and Jensen's inability to grant title, or custody, even on a temporary basis, one of the most popular steam locomotives of the 1960's and 70's was lost for alltime. The court, incidently, found that 5629 was not a unique locomotive, worthy of an exception to scrapping until it could be saved. Apparently there are two other ex-GTW Pacifics displayed at other locations. I think this single case represents how ignorance of the value of an operable, historical antiquity, looms over every steam locomotive that sits without people to advocate for it. SImilarly we see the loss of Jensen's other locomotive, CB&Q 5632, which was cut up in an action later judged by the courts to be totally illegal, and for which Jensen received cold compensation at the cost of the irreplaceable Northern. I must somberly predict that we will see more and more of this type of action in the next decade unless organized and steam locomotive savvy groups adopt and make progress to get locomotive out of parks and off derelict sidings. Has anyone a picture of CB&Q 5632 being cut up? I have never seen one, and I can't believe it was done at night and under cover. |
