I did make it down to Greenwood and had a chance to see the Rockton-Rion 2-8-2. She sits behind a fence that is covered with vines and thus she is really tough to see. The engine looks in pretty good shape and she does have a roof to protect her. She also has five or six passenger cars behind has, one of which is a very neat Peidmont and Northern car. It had rounded end, making it look like an interurban car. (maybe it is) The vines covering the fence also prevented a good look at the cars.
I also visited the Georgia Railroad 2-8-2 in Augusta Ga. (the purpose of my trip) She is very nicely preserved inside the Augusta-Richmond museum in downtown Augusta. A very nice product of Lima and a lot larger than I though she would be. Definitely worth the trip! I am looking for a pic of her when she was outside to post on my web site.

The sister 2-8-2 to the Mikado in Greenwood, SC is preserved at the Okeffenokee Heritage Center in Waycross, Georgia (see my recent posting on the 5 similar ex-Woodward Iron Mikes.) Don't know how close Waycross is to Augusta but it might be worth a look the next time you're in the area.

there are (I belive)three pieces of P. & N. equipment in Greenwood.
- Office Car 'Carolina'
- The LAST P&N Intururban car existant
- A P&N Caboose (ex-SAL I think)
One big point - rumours are circulating that this collection may be broken up in the near future. I have heard two stories - take them at their face value:
Story #1:

The 90+ year old lady who currently owns the property/museum/and rolling stock is going into an assited care facility, and will leave the equipment to her children, who will keep the museum going.

Story #2:

Starts like the one above - BUT the equipment is either to be sold for what it is wort -or scrapped on site?!?

(by the way the collection is currently landlocked - two miles to rail acess - so good luck in moving ANY of it, especially #19. Even devoid of water/coal and removable parts a 100 ton loco could only be 'lightened ' so much!

I spoke with a Mr. Adams who identified himself as being in charge of the Greenwood Railroad Heritage Collection. I got the impression that they are an active museum. In fact he told me they had just repainted their two Erie passenger cars.

I'm really glad to hear that. They do have most, if not all of their collection under cover. With a modicum of TLC the collection should last indefinately!
