Syracuse indeed! DL&W also ran in the streets of Syracuse. After talks of a Union Station and other plans, NYC elevated first. This became right of way for highway 690. The station was just restored for a TV company with a wonderful mural of a streamline hudson for people zipping by to look at. On the other side of the highway are the REA buildings and a platform with lifesize figures waiting for a train that will never come. Some of the original street trackage remains if you know where to look.The DL&W elevation survives, serving NYS&W. The station remains, but for non-railroad purpose. NYS&W/OnTrack built a new station right next to it.Joshua

The Central New York chapter of the NRHS issued a paper-back book in 1970 titled "Railroads in the Streets of Syracuse" that had many unusual photos of various locomotives ( including a streamlined Mercury) traversing the downtown streets. The book was re-issued in 1979 with additional photos and facts. I picked mine up at their table at the 1979 NRHS convention in Syracuse, and highly recommend it for anyone interested in this topic.
