Jeersey Central locomotives

Besides the 113, subject of todays Brief, are there any other surviving steamers from this important regional railroad?Their logo with the Statue of Liberty always seemed to be way cool to me! I have it on a couple of my model freight cars.Ted Miles

Ted:The other survivor is at the B&O Museum; a 4-4-2 Camelback # 592. I believe that these two are the only surviving Central Railroad of New Jersey steam locomotives.Les Beckman (Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum/North Judson, Indiana)

The "Lady Liberty" herald is still present on the light fixtures in the ex-Jersey Central coach on the Big Trees & Pacific (Roaring Camp). Two were purchased from the Wolfeboro in 1986 (along with the wooden ex-B&M coaches), one of which is in service.

There is an 0-4-0 in a marl pit near Farmingdale, NJ. The existance of the locomotive is fact, but it's history is somewhat debateable. There is a camp that believes it is a an ex CNJ locomotive used by the marl company.Also, locl legend has it another ex CNJ 0-4-0 used by a sand company south of Lakehurst is buried on the property. There is no evidence of that. At least you can see the one in the marl pit.Rob

If we only count locomotives not under water/mud, the number of anthracite steam locomotives saved is p!$$ poor...Reading leads with 7DL&W 3 (one narrow gauge)CNJ 2L&NE 1Erie 0LV 0O&W 0D&H 0 Ironically, the railroad with the most preserved classes of locomotives that ran in the anthracite fields is the PRR, though it's not really an anthracite road. But those Pennsy 4-6-2, 2-8-2, 2-8-0, 2-10-0 and even 4-8-2's were regulars in the likes of Pottsville, Hazelton and Wilkes-Barre.Rob

Of course, there are many early/rare anthracite road diesels left unpreserved...CNJ SW-1 (waiting, waiting)LNE S-2 (no LNE diesels preserved)O&W NW-2 (one is sort of "saved")LV SW-1LV U23B (the "last" anthracite road units pre-Conrail)The only road well represented in diesel preservation is the Reading, thanks to the tremendous Reading Co. And don't forget that the K4's rode the Lackawanna to Gravel Place in East Stroudsburg. Does anyone know if the K4 at Steamtown being restored ever made the Philadelphia - East Stroudsburg run up the Bel-Del?

There are at least two LV SW-1s still around, one owned by the Wilmington & Western. In addition, several LV SW-8s and a CNJ SW-7 are still in the hands of preservation-friendly shortlines.
