I tried to post this to "flimsies", but that format doesn't really lend itself to announcing a web site, so, I'm putting it here.

A new web site has appeared for Friends of 2713, the group responsible for maintaining Soo Line 2713, the 4-6-2 in the park in Stevens Point, WI. This group has done an excellent job of cosmetically restoring the engine, complete with boiler jacket, and Soo Line wood caboose 158. They also have one of the nicest display pavilions on the planet.

No, this isn't the Soo Pacific that was running, that's the 2719. This park engine was a donor of some parts to that project. However, this is a good example of what a park display can look like, with the proper application of funds.

Speaking of Soo Line 4-6-2's, does anyone know the status of the engine out in North Dakota that was threatened with "dumping in a hole" to get rid of the asbestos problem. I believe there was a rescue effort of some type and the locals were going to try to handle the problem and cosmetically fix up the locomotive. Anyone know what's going on with it?

This group did not let their dreams of being Casey Joneses go beyond their abilities or budget, ending in a dismantled locomotive with parts scattered from here to anywhere. Their project represents about the best that most display locomotives could hope for, short of being put back in a roundhouse from which they once worked. If every display engine had a group this dedicated, communities could be proud and not ashamed of the locomotives they own. Such restorations are within the ability and funds of most volunteer groups who have a few basic shop skills and networking abilities.

The shelter provides cover, but does not severely inhibit photography, nor the engines removal should funds somehow be later raised to make it run again. This is a first class effort that should be imitated many times over in North America.

That's Soo Line 735. All three engines are the same size; the difference in numbering comes from whether they were owned by the Soo outright or purchased for the WC when it was under lease. The 2719 was purchased for the WC, but transferred to Soo ownership during the depression. There…clear as mud, right?

As to the 735 in Minot, one of the local fans who was also with the Air National Guard spearheaded a movement to have the asbestos abated and the engine remained in the park at the city zoo. As it was, the local Air Guard unit is certified for asbestos removal, and donated their time. I believe the City of Minot came up with the funds for the containment shelter and disposal. As far as I know, the job is done and the engine was not butchered, but I've not really been able to make contact with anyone from the area to confirm this.
