Rutland 55 (close kin to the C&NW R-1 class), at Burlington, Vermont, June 1, 1947. I worked briefly in that enginehouse in 1999, which is still in use by Vermont Rail Systems. VRS offices are now located right behind the engine. Developers would love to get their hands on this waterfront property, which has one of the best views of the Adirondacks anywhere. The 50 series 4-6-0s were mostly used on the "tin can" local between Burlington and Rutland by time of the photo.http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?m ... /rut55.jpg

It sure does look close to the CN&W R-1's. It would be interesting to compare prints and specs to see how close. I have seen many 4-6-0's that resembled the R-1, but there were obvious differences. This one sure looks close though. Thanks for the pictures. John.

I believe the main differences as-built were that the Rutland engines had a sloping throat sheet, while the throat sheet on the C&NW engines was vertical. I think the C&NW engines later acquired outside steam pipes to the cylinders, which the Rutland engines did not. Some C&NW R-1s were rebuilt with a larger boiler, which did have the sloping throat sheet. The New York Central may have had some engines like this also (Rutland was under NYC control at the time), but I haven't seen any photos.
