For several years (and maybe still), there were two engines stored at the Quincy smelter in Hancock, MI. Was one of those #29? What was the fate of those two engines, and of #29 if it was not one of those two?RTK

As stated in the post by "Steve C" the 29 is at Mid-Continent, the other locomotive is a former C&NW R-1 #175...privately owned.

C&NW 175 is still in Michigan. The owner (Clint Jones) had it prepped to move when CR #29 moved, but it's still up there.

When CR #29 was moved to Mid-Continent last year, the webcam captured it. Click on this link:http://www.midcontinent.org/netcam/cr29/default.htm

...of our lack of interest in the State of Michigan in preserving our rail heritage. Once again, Michigan has to look to neighboring states, such as Wisconsin and Illinois, to preserve some of its historic equipment. Some other ones (and please, I'm not attacking the institutions that did preserve them, just the fact that ones here did not) that "got away" so to speak:At Mid Continent: 1.) East Jordan & Southern #2 (1864) --- Originally a Grand Trunk car, this combine was one of the last wooden cars used in regular service in the State of Michigan, and was operable on the LAST mixed train in the state.2.) Copper Range #25, and #60 (1903) --- The last surviving cars from one of the most interesting of Michigan railroads. Kudos to Mid-Continent by taking the next step and preserving #29, the loco that pulled them.3.) Lake Superior & Ishpeming #1 & #64 (1898 & 1910) ---- Two cars which have survived from a railroad that stopped using passenger service in 1929. And one sat in the yard at Marquette until 1969. 4.) Soo Line #522 (1906) --- Built as #511, it main Michigan connection is that it was used as the trailer behind the Soo Line's gas-electric car M-1 between Gladstone and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on trains No. 86 and 87 for many years.5.) D.S.S. & A. #701 (1902) --- #701 was originally used on South Shore trains No. 7 and No. 8, which ran between Duluth and Sault Ste. Marie, making it one of the few survivors of that consist.6.) Boyne City Gaylord & Alpena #1 (1906) --- One of the last survivng wooden snow plows that was used in Michigan, sadly, it was preserved here once only to be sold at auction........I could go on forever ---- and that is only at Mid-Continent, and there are a lot of others there too. Michigan's loss is Wisconsin's treasure. I tell ya, there's days when I wonder why I keep trying to fight what seems a losing battle for rail preservation in a dying rust-belt state that tied itself WAY too closely to the auto companies. I've tried to do my part, and had some successes and way too many loses: helped preserve one combine and a 2-4-0 Porter, lost a baggage, a caboose, a carferry, a snow plow, and had a brief reprieve for a Baldwin 0-6-0 in a park nearby (that is nowhere near where it should be, but again, another matter) ---- I guess that its starting to seem pretty small in comparison to what COULD and SHOULD have been saved here. I'm sure others in other states have delt with this, too, but Michigan started in the 1960's and 70's on the track to being Colorado, PA, Wisconsin, Illinois ------ and imploded in the 1980's and 1990's, so much so I doubt, even with SRI, the Huck, and the Henry Ford, we can bring it back. Look, all of us here try --- but I've yet to see a comprehensive effort to preserve cars related to Michigan's heritage, and sadly, the Henry Ford in particular has done everything it could to get rid of those cars (an entire D&M trainset, in fact). Now a priceless D&M baggage car, with all its original elements, has been remuddled into some screwed up verison of a DL&W car for someone's STIHL tool display in New Jersey. In short, I doubt there will ever be a Michigan State Railroad Museum, and, well, it friggin' hurts.Sorry for the rant --- " Bad Day in Blackrock" I guess.TJ

Hey, T.J., Take it easy on us here In New Jersey! We can sympathize with you. Our two escapades into establishing a museum here have also gone to the wind. Your story is so synonymous, I could have substituted "NJ" in place of Michigan in your post! I share your frustration. R.O.

Last time I checked (today) there is still a D&M 0-6-0, combine (#100) and caboose on site at the Henry Ford. Sure the Baldwin and caboose are outdoors, but the wooden combine is stored safely inside. That leaves the D&M business car #99 which went west and the baggage car which went east.3 out of 5 within the state of Michigan.
