The webpage on this project has the following:As the resident "steam lizard" fan; I think having a working fire car is a great idea for a working display. It illustrates a facet of logging operations that is rarely seen. I assume it will run off of compressed air from the air brake line?In looking at the picture of the car remains, I could not make out the steam pump. Was it preserved, or will it be replaced by one of the steam pumps owned by the SVRy?WSL's Shays also carried steam fire pumps; although some have been removed since they went into preservation. Here is the one on Shay #10; looks like a Fairbanks, Morse & Co. duplex:... and yet another Fairbanks, Morse & Co. duplex on Shay #12. Unfortunely, the original pump was removed from the #5 at roaring camp, rumor is that it's mounted on thier Heisler.SVRR has a matching duplex pump in storage, already rebuilt and ready to install.It's exciting to see work moving forward on the #5, although it's to early to give a estimated completion date.Thanks for your interest........ That could be. I have a picture of their Heisler that was sent to me by Ed Kelly; and you can see a steam pump mounted just forward of the air tank over the front truck on the engineer's side. Looks like it could be a FM duplex pump. Their Shay has one mounted on the fireman's side just ahead of the cab.Yes, I was sent two pictures of two of SVRy's steam pumps. They were captured from a video that was taken in the 1970s. They are both FM duplex pumps; one looks like it would be just the right size.Falling between our relocation (thanks to Hurricane Rita) and the holidays, we are cashed strapped right now. But this is one project I would like to support when things are better; this is a great idea. Thanks for taking it on. That is correct, both #1 "Dixiana" and #2 (the Heisler) have the pumps. #7 does not have one. I don't know the origins of either.The Kahuku (0-4-2T) also had a pump in the 77-78 timeframe when it was the only alternate motive power while the 1 was being reboilered. While I would have to check with others, I presume this would have been the 1's pump, seen below in this photo by Jeff Hartmann taken in 1978. The headlight in this picture is from the 1, and the spot plate (only replaced fairly recently) was worn by the Heisler on the West Side....and here is a scan of a postcard showing the "coffin car" in a photo freight consist behind the Heisler at Roaring Camp from about 1963-64, when the railroad first began operations.

Hi Ed;I need to review the tape I have that gives a pretty good closeup shot of the pump as the Shay goes by. But, I remember it was a Worthington pump; it might be the Worthington 3 x 2 x 3 you see in your picture of Kahuku.I assume the "box" on top of the Coffin Car is where the steam pump was housed. Here's the best close-up examples of both pumps I could find, the Heisler's on the left and the Dixiana's on the right (thanks to John Goldie for the original full-size photos). I know the Dixie does have a Worthington pump; other than that, I don't know much else about either. The one with all the answers would be Tom Shreve, as he has been in the shop more than anyone to ever work for the company (33 years). I would pose this question over on the NG Discussion Forum.P.S: The Heisler's pump is mounted beneath the running board above the pilot truck, but in front of the fire hose spool. The air tank is in the cab, just one reason why it's such an "interesting" machine.

Ed.Tom is the one who told me that the pump on the Heisler came from the coffin tank car. The Heisler has a Worthington 3 x 2 x 3 or 3 x 2 x 4 duplex; perhaps the one from Kahuku. It is certainly the same kind of pump; it is also the same as the one on Shay #15.Dixie's Worthington pump looks like my Worthington 4½ x 2¾ x 4 duplex; the photo below was taken from roughly the same angle.You're right, of course; I stand corrected. What a neat arrangement.
