It was tarted up in the summer of 1957. Given the prima vera state of the foliage, this is probably late April or very early May 1958. I believe the engine went to scrap in 1958, and given the location this may even be the move to the scrap yard.JAC

Bob, John, & all, Per "Norfolk and Western Railway" by Richard E. Prince and "The Steam Locomotive Directory of North America" by Dave Conrad, 475 was sold by N&W to Va. Scrap Iron & Metal in April, 1961. It was subsequently sold to William Armagost of Holsopple, Pa. in January of 1968. It appears that it was sitting on the lead track into the scrapyard, about where the Chesapeake Western Baldwin diesels are now sitting. That could very well be N&W 1118, one of the "Lost Engines of Roanoke" just in front of it.

Thanks. Had it in my head that it went to scrap in '58, and to Armagost in '61. I'm going to have to stop trusting my memory.JAC

When I was a ten my dad and I visited the spur where Mr. Armagost kept 475 and some other equipment. If I remember correctly the siding was off the C & O branch line to Johnstown, PA. and was near Bethlehem Steel's Quemahoning Dam. I have some pictures somewhere of the loco under a tarp. I'll post them when I find them.Wasn't it a surprise to find out the Strasburg now owns and operates this locomotive I visited back in 1978!
