I hope this isn't too far off topic - we all like to take pictures of trains, or at least look at pictures of trains. A friend of mine recommended using only 35mm slide film for formal portraits of our equipment, saying that print film was usually too grainy. That was news to me. Any comments? I used to take slides, but switched to prints because most places nowadays either don't handle slides or take much longer to return them. You can make slides from negatives if you ever need them. I haven't had any problem with the quality of the prints I get back, other than a loose nut behind the camera.... |

I had always heard that slide film is what the professionals prefer. The main issue appears to be price, slide film being more expensive in most cases to develope and print. Slides are said to be less grainy, in any book on photography I've read, and most web sites I've seen. Color correction is an issue that seems to be better attacked in the use of print (negative image) film, though. With a slide (or chrome) the colors captured by the film, are the colors. With a negative, the possible colors transferred to the "paper", are endless. Color rendition can be affected by the temperature and age of the chemistry being used. shootpix@hotmail.com |
