OK, happy to report the MODERATOR glitch was a simple error, at least simple to find after a good night's sleep, and has been corrected. So, the Interchange is back up with the entire archive going back to 1998 (thank you Amherst Society) and at its new home at Sunserver.com (thank you Doug Bailey). Everything went suprisingly well, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong (hard to beleive). Got a message that the auto login quit working, but that's only because the cookies got lost in the swtich to the new server. Set the auto login feature box on again and it will work. The one thing that disturbs me is that there are over 100,000 thousand words in the word search list, which the database uses to do lightning fast searches, and I'm guessing that 30-40% of them are misspelled words, or not even misspelled, just not words at all. This doesn't affect anything now, but all that wasted server space could be an issue later. Some other good news however, reported in the first message that the author search won't work for the pre PHPBB archive which is true. But, in the conversion process from Webbbs to PHPBB the converter did put the author's names into the post and you can find them using the word search. So, you can find every post Hume Kading ever made by using my name in the word search for the pre PHPBB archive, and in the author search for the post PHPBB era. So, next step is to see if we can install the new Thread Mod, for the people who prefer threads. The new mod bubbles new posts to old threads up to the top so you don't have to go searching thru pages and pages of old topics to see if any new posts have been made (of course the flat view users don't have that problem, but who am I to judge). No promises on when this upgrade will be made but hopefully soon. Hope you enjoy searching the archive as much as I have last night and at my lunch break today. |

Hume Congratulations on a job well done. A valuable resource just got that much better ! The mis-spelled word thing is a problem that continues to grow by leaps and bounds in many parts of our computerized society. I think the problem is best typified by a friend of mine who was a notoriously bad speller. Even though he used spell-check religiously, sometimes a word "just didn't look right", and he'd let his mis-spelled version go. Unfortunately, he also had his word processor set to add any "new" words, so eventually his dictionary had almost as many mis-spelled as correct words ! I'm sure we'll manage,, even mangled words are better than none at all. Congratulations and thanks from everyone. |

Spell check is also prone to replace words when it simply is ignorant of a perfectly good word spelled properly. It has no contextual referents. Don't trust it if you write over a fourth grade level. dave |

Old treads work - but they are sometimes strange to read: click on some writers artwork and you dive into someoneelses? Thats strange but after testing all posts in the thread I found all writers.... http://rypn.sunserver.com/forum/viewtop ... 158&t=1540 But seeing those old thread was a good sight - keep up the good work. dave Darn right, Dave! I have seen some very funny errors in various places because people rely ONLY on the spell-check feature, and do not get anyone to proofread text for them. Context is essential! Example: I once saw an announcement that used the phrase "toll bride" when they meant "toll bridge". :) A really good human proofreader is essential. Margaret (SP fan) |
