With 2005 ending soon, I'm curious about how many steam locomotives were brought back to service after a long time of being inactive this year.
The NKP 765 and D&RGW 464 are back, who else are in service?

There used to be an annual listing of operating steam locomotives, put together by Jim Wrinn, on the Steam Central website (http://www.steamcentral.com/), however, the website seems to have disappeared. Anyone know what happened? I know Jim Wrinn used to post occasionally on this site, anyone know if there is any chance his annual list will show up somewhere else if Steam Central is gone?

Jim did the first version, then he and Jeff Terry began collaborating on it, then Jeff took it over; it nows runs in print in R&R as part of Jeff's very fine Lineside Legacy preservation column.

Steam Central was John Craft's site; most of his energy these days is going into organizing charters, running his business, etc. You can visit his charter site at steamspecials.com

I moved everything to a new server in October, and haven't gotten the SteamCentral content uploaded. Hopefully I'll get to it between Christmas and New Year.

If anyone wants to take a stab at Jim's 2003 list, I'll post it at Steam Central.

Jeff Terry's Lineside Legacy column used to be posted on Steamlocomotive Info (http://www.steamlocomotive.info/), but hasn't been in quite some time, anyone know what happened there? If he is doing an annual operating steam locomotive list in his column, it would then be posted there, but it hasn't had an update since March 04.

No. 10 was purchased by the museum in 1999 and has since been extensively rebuilt. It was formerly owned by Edaville.

0-4-4T no. 9 (nee-Sandy River #6, built Portland Company 1891), also at the WW&F, is undergoing restoration.

I'm still here. Still keeping the flame burning! Looking outside today at 12 inches of snow at 16 degree temperatures and not a steam engine in sight.. sigh. Crayuft... we gotta do something about this Johnnie!

New York has operable steam in the form of a 2' gauge Davenport 0-4-0T (ex-Indian Valley Ralroad (William Willock), Syosset, NY) at the Erie Canal Village in Rome, NY. This locomotive was rebuilt 2-3 years ago now by owner Railstar Corp. in their Watertown, NY shop. Rolling stock at this railroad includes the small coach from the High Country Railroad in Golden, CO, as well as a combine which I believe was built in Railstar's shop.

Here along the Central/Northern Coast of California,
The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad #2 (18" gauge, 2-6-2, built 1905 for the Venice Railway) returned to service in Los Gatos, CA this year after a decade-long reboilering. In addition, the "Melodia" (an 1897 Porter, ex-Barker & LePine Co. Plantation, rebuilt by Crown into a 2-6-2 and spending some time in amusement park service) returned to service on the privately-owned Pacific Coast Narrow-Gauge Railroad in Santa Margarita, CA. The railroad's 1923 Vulcan is also operable.

Roaring Camp & Big Trees numbers 1 (2T Shay), 7 (3T Shay, 2 (2T Heisler), 3 (0-4-2T), and ) are all operable, although the latter two are best described as the "shop queens". PLA volunteers in Niles Canyon are in the later stages of rebuilding the ex-Robert Dollar Co. #3, and they also of course run the ex-Quincy #2 twice each month in season (April-Oct). Also worthy of mention, the San Francisco Zoo's 100-year-old, 22" gauge Cagney is also operable. While a park engine, only a fraction of operating steam today has hit the century mark.
