Bob: She was cosmetically restored basically by one man at IRM a number of years ago and looked as good as the photo. Alas, I think she may have fallen on hard times lately. Perhaps someone at IRM can clue us in. Les Beckman (Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum/North Judson, Indiana) |

I may be wrong, but If I remember correctly, she is another project in the IRM steam shop with plans of being returned to service. That is most likely a long term project, but I seem to remember seeing the grid map on the boiler for the new form 4. They have a lot of irons in the fire there, and I wish them all the luck in getting a locomotive up and running this year. This last summer, the long time steam standard there, Frisco 1630 was down for running gear repairs that require the wheels to be dropped. The musuems drop pit is not in service so as far as I know, nothing has been done on her yet. They do have the Tuskegee 101 in some form of tear down as she used to run and was torn down for repair. She needs a new smoke box floor, along with everything needed for part 230. J Neils lumber Shay is also in some state of waiting for repairs that may be a long time in the future. Their best hope that I have seen is the UP 2-8-0 428. The last time I was there, she was mostly back together, and an almost new cab was taking shape in a corner of the shop. To all of the IRM folks, I say thanks for your work, and good luck. I know that there's a lot of work to be done for a few weekends a month. |

Well, L&A 99 looks no worse than it did after its cosmetic restoration, except perhaps for some dust. It's been on public display inside Barn 9 since then. |

You are correct that the wheelwork on the Decapod awaits the completion of the drop pit. That, however, is moving along. The rails are laid in the bottom and electrical rough in is done. The Whiting elevator mechanism has been totally restored and awaiting a crane to drop it in, follwed by the also restored cradle. Work continues apace on the UP 428 - so how many parts are there on a steam locomotive? If you re-install 25 pieces every weekend, it may only be a century to re-assemble it. Almost ready for a test firing though, as appliances and piping are being fit back together on a regular basis. The tender for the 428 has also seen a lot of progress including rebuilding of the trucks including new leaf springs, etc. GN&A 26 is a little remarked project and it is probably closer than the Tuskeegee 101. It has had a boiler test and a fair amount of firebox sides removed for replacement. And of course all the tubes are out for form 4, mapping, etc. The cab area has been totally restored, new woodwork, windows and doors. The Shay may be the sleeper here. New tubes and superheater flues are made and ready to install, and the last few weeks have seen work on the new grates and related mechanism. We are not advertising or promising steam operation this year, but the Shay may see a trip or two before the summer is over. Stress "MAY". So do not go running around waving a flag and cross posting this all over or out of context. Just be assured the steam program at IRM is alive and well and work is proceeding on a number of fronts. Oh yes, we have added an extension to the building housing the steam shop and it should be ready for occupancy this week or next, giving us almost 50% additional space. Bob Kutella |

Bob- Thanks for the update. Good to hear that things are progressing well in IRM's steam department. Especially good news on the GN&A 2-6-0 # 26. Long one of my favorite engines. And with a Vanderbuilt tender to boot! Also good to hear from Frank Hicks that L&A 2-8-0 #99 is just a bit dusty. Maybe pull her out of the barn some day and hose her down? Les Beckman |
