The Rocky Mountain Rail Society (CNR 6060) is having difficulties sourcing 1"flexible staybolt cups and caps. We would appreciated any info as to where other societies etc might be sourcing these components, Pricing info would also be very useful.

Why don't you have them made by a local machine shop or high school? That's what we did for ETR #9 is St. Thomas, Ontario. They work fine.

Call the Strasburg Rail Road @ 1-717-687-8421 and ask for Linn Moedinger or Rick Musser. The Rail Road is an accredited ASME Code shop and has had thousands of flexible staybolt caps and sleeves made for themselves and other railroads like the UP and Durango and Silverton. Certification is included with all pressure parts.

Also, check with Robert Franzen at Grand Canyon Railway, as he is having all different types of flexis and rigids made, as well as sleeves and caps. I'm not sure if the Stras is currently making them or not, but Mr. Moedinger can point you in the right direction. Having them made locally is OK, but be SURE to use the right material and dimensional specs. I assume, based on your question, that the 6060 is blessed with a Flannary-type staybolt installation, with welded on caps or biscuits. There are many methods for biscuit replacement, so check around and ask Franzen and Moedinger for their advice. Also, be sure to note the thread type of your bolts, as changing from the Whitworth(spelling?) to V-threads can affect your staybolt stresses when calculating MAWP. Mark is the better one to answer specifics in this area, but just cuttin' threads on steel stock won't get it without being informed of what you are doing.

For any of you gentlemen looking for parts (staybolts or otherwise) or services for steam locomotives, please check my listing at the link below.

I don't receive any compensation for these listings. I started on the list several years ago and I'm amazed at how many companies there are actively engaged in steam work. If any of you know of any suppliers or shops I haven't listed, please let me know.

Good Steaming,
Hugh Odom
