Bob: According to the photo caption, this is Dresden during an annual steam-in in 2003. But I don't know whether this is a museum or just a DB roundhouse where the steamers are housed. I suspect these locos are the ones in the old East Germany that were later used for the Plan Dampf operations several years ago. Thanks! |

It is the former locomotive depot at Dresden Altstadt which is now operated as an annex of the DB Museum, mainly housing locos which were operated by the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn. |

Definitely Dresden Altstadt and part of the museum there, which includes 2 roundhouses. This one houses the larger main line locomotives and the second one houses smaller locos. In May of each year the museum hosts the Dampflok Fest which attracts as many as 30+ steam locomotives, many coming from other parts of Germany and the Czech Republic. The festival runs over a weekend and the price of admission is very low, maybe one or two Euro Dollars. I was there in 1993 when this photo was taken and again several times at later events. There is nothing like this event in the USA and it's well worth a visit. All the locomotives are displayed with at least two giving cab rides in the yard during the event. Passengers are ferried from the Bahnhof downtown to the museum by a "pull-pull" train with steam locos at each end and you can drive to the site, also. The photo was taken from a street overpass which has a walkway and is safe for photographers. It provides a great view of the action. Steam power arrives and departs the complex as specials arrive or leave and locomotives are frequently put on the turntable for visitors to view. It is a spectacular steam event. Also, if you go, be sure to take a ride on the steamboats which are on the River Elbe downtown. On May 1 each year, other steamboats are brought in for a parade so that's a great day to view and/or ride them. I think there are 8 steamboats in the fleet, powered by engines as old as the 1860's. Dresden is a great place to visit, especially during these events. For info on the locomotive festival, do a web search for Dresdener Dampflokfest. -Jim Herron |

Oops, the photo was shot in 2003, not 1993 as I had thought. The scene hasn't changed any since the 1990's though. -Jim Herron |
