I am looking into travel arrangements to get to the convention. At the moment, it appears the cheapest way for me to get to North Carolina is to fly SouthWest airlines, which is running a $30 per segment special. However, that will deposit me at the Raleigh-Duram airport, which if I read my Rand-McNally Atlas correctly is still about 120 miles from Salisbury. Can anyone familiar with the area suggest how best to get to Salisbury from RDU? Train, bus, rent-a-car?

Evan,

If you can get a deal like that, go for it! Depending on time of day (avoid afternoon rush hour if you can), you should be able to get between RDU and Salisbury in a little over 2 hours). NCDOT's psgr. trains Carolinian and Piedmont are one option as is rental car.

We'll look forward to seeing you in November. Jim

Raleigh (RGH) and Durham (DNC) both have RR stations. Amtrak offers the following:

73 79 80 74
RGH 0705 1622 SAL 0845 1826
DNC 0739 1703 DNC 1108 2032
SAL 0949 1929 RGH 1149 2123

Full fare is currently $34.00 I believe the convention site sez there will be a discount. Be advised 79-80 operate to/from NY; 79 of 7-24 was 31 min late at Salisbury (SAL).

Well, the site didn't exactly retain my spacing. Suffice it to say, trains leave Raleigh at 0705 and 1622, arriving SAL at 0949 and 1929 respectively. Returning, leave SAL at 0845 and 1826, arriving RGH at 1149 and 2123. Amtrak.com has the info.

Evan, should you find yourself stranded for any length of time in the Raleigh area, grab a cab to Cary Amshak and go across the street to the basement of the convenience store and have the best buffalo wings and greatest assortment of microbrews in the southeast at Harrison's.

Happy traveling.
