The Northern Ohio Railway Museum has a former Reading Railroad car we need to find a new home for. See notice below. Steve Heister Northern Ohio Railway Museum motormansteve@core.com 1911 Wooden Passenger Car Available The Northern Ohio Railway Museum, a museum of electric railways near Cleveland has, deaccessioned a railroad combine car. The car was originally acquired for conversion into a visitors center, but our plans have changed and this has rendered the car surplus. It is now available for sale or trade. Car 1088 was built in 1911 by Harlan and Hollingworth, a subsidiary of the Bethlehem Car Company, for the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. It was originally configured as a day coach with a clerestory roof. Sometime after its Reading career, baggage doors were added to one end. The car is of composite construction having a steel underframe and truss rods connecting to a steel substructure working with wood to frame the car. The exterior is wood sheathing with a wooden car interior. The trucks are a four wheel outside bolster design. In the mid 1920’s when the Reading began replacing these composite cars with all steel cars, this car was sold to the Mississippian Railway. During World War II, it returned north to the Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railway. With the end of passenger service on that line, the car went into company service until 1964. In 1964 shortly after taking over operations of the P&WV, the N&W retired the car. Car #1088 ended up in a scrap yard in Canton, Ohio. The car was later acquired by a railfan who had it moved in a train from Canton to a siding in Navarre, Ohio. Our museum acquired the car in 1980, still at the Navarre site. The car was serviced and passed a railroad brake test. During its move, the N&W damaged the draft gear on one end of the car and paid for $11,000 of 1980 specification FRA mandated repairs. After shopping, it was moved in a train to Medina, Ohio and interchanged to the Chessie System for storage in a siding there. In 1984 the car moved again on Chessie to another siding further down the line. In 1991 the car was highway trucked to the museum. To accommodate the trucking move, a coupler and a set of vestibule steps were removed and stored in the car. Today the frame and substructure of the car are solid and the brake system and trucks are complete. The exterior siding and roof are deteriorated and will need to be replaced. The interior, which was missing at the time the car was acquired by the museum, will need to be reconstructed. An information packet about the car is available. Terms are negotiable—sale or trade. We would like to have the car off of our property by next summer. If a buyer is not found for the car by the end of 2006, the car will be scrapped. Sound like a perfect addition for Strasburg with their two P&R cars or Reading Tech with their recently acquired milk car frame. Either way I hope a good home is found for this Anthricite relic. Kevin |
